Tiji Festival of Upper Mustang, the chasing of the Daemons, Get Ida to Travel Mustang in Nepal

The three -days spiritual and ritual fest in Upper Mustang Lo-Manthang - 'The city of Mud' Buddhist community  Known as 'the chasing of the Daemons' and centered of the Tiji myth. Tiji tells the story of the deity named Dorje Sonam'  who must battle against his demon father to save the Kingdom of Mustang form destruction. The demon father wreaks havoc of Mustang by creating a water shortage which in this extremely arid land, most precious life-sustaining resource. Tiji come from the worlds 'ten che' meaning 'the hope of Buddhist prevailing in all worlds'.

Tiji is the famous Buddhist festival in Upper Mustang held every year in  spring month according the Tibetan Buddhism Moon calendar in Lo Manthang city.

Actually the festival name was Tenji. Later commonly pronounced 'Teeji'  is the abberiavted from of Tempa Chhirinm which translates to 'Prayer for World Peace.' Tenji commemorates the victory of Buddha's incarnation. Dorje sonam over a demon called  Ma Tam Ru Ta, who was man eater and who caused storms and droughts to destroy people's  houses and livestock. The teeji festival mask dance preformed by the monks of Lomanthang Chhyode Gompa during these three days festival enact the harassment of the Ma Tam Ru Ta,  the birth of Dorje Sonam and demon's called 'Tsa Chham'.




On the first day of teeji festival with monk 'Tsa Chham'  mask dance by groups of monks with different faces of traditional clothes and day second 'Naga Chham' dance.  Monks stay in seclusion for three monks during the winter preparing for the role of Dorje Sonam. On third day, the ceremony called 'Rha Chham' the day of village purified  from evil spirits by Dorje Sonam through the effigy and Tsampa representation of Ma Tam Ru Ta with the attended of King's of Mustang and many villagers. The king made a air firing and celebrate the ceremony as happy and blessing together. The festival organized by Chhyode Gompa which is a Sakyapa sect monastery insight Lo Manthang, Namgyal and Chhoser village in Upper Mustang Village area.

On the Occasion  of  this fest in Mustang, many domestic tourist, villages and nearby village people and large number of foreigner tourist will attendance by trekking from Jomsom and Nayapul or Beni En-route of Annapurna.

How to Get Upper Mustang ? 
It is special protected area of Annapurna Conservation Project North form Pokhara City. The Mustang divided 2 section Upper and Lower. Jomsom is the District Capital of Mustang is connected by Air 'Flight ' from Pokhara and By road from Pokhara - Beni - Kalopani. A 15 minute short mountain flight you will reach Jomsom and if you wish to go by trek on foot take 5 extra day to get there. If you wish to drive local transport to Chaile than after 3 days hike you will reach to Lo Manthang. The city already connected by road form Tibet as well. Now many people go there by riding Mountain Bike is more popular way among the tourist and young community.

What about the accommodation on route and Mustang ?
All the way to Mustang and Lo Mantahng is a popular trekking route for tourist and trekker. Every day and every village on route like Kajbeni, Chhaile, Chhuksang, Samar, Syangboche, Ghiling, Ghami, Tsarang and Lo Manthang offer Tourist standard home basis simple mountain guest houses and well home made local food. Suggest to you better to have and carry a sleeping bags and air plug for night. The domestic animal belling on night. Better for good sleep.

Do we need permits and to pay any entry to get there ?
Yes, Upper Mustang is a most secret, non tourist and special protected trekking area of Nepal. Allowed to visit around with the special trekking permits for foreigner which is issued by Nepal Immigration under the process by Registered trekking agency with a Guide and support team. You need to pay Annapurna Conservation Entry fees as well.

What are the cost for entry and permit  and required doc ?
For the Mustang Trekking and biking Permit cost for minimum 10 days 500US$ per person. (at list they required 2 person to get that permit, Single person entry are not allowed, This cost for Tourist those who are International foreigner,  20 US$ for Annapurna Conservation Entry fee. (For SAARC Nation 200NRS per person). Required Valid passport with Nepal visa detail, Passport size of photo 4 copies.
